Dear Friends and Neighbors in Butte County’s Communities,

Malo e lelei (hello in Tongan, my mother’s native language)! Let me share about this beautiful place we call home and tell you about the Community Schools movement. 

Butte County boasts a diverse and scenic landscape, ranging from the fertile agricultural fields of the Central Valley, where crops like rice, almonds, and walnuts thrive, to the rugged Sierra Nevada foothills with dense forests, rivers, and lakes such as Lake Oroville. Known for its rich agricultural heritage and outdoor recreational opportunities, the county's natural beauty is complemented by its resilience in the face of wildfires and floods. This blend of farmland, waterways, and mountainous terrain creates a unique environment that supports both rural living and a strong connection to nature.

The Community Schools Landscape in Butte County

Here in Butte County, we’re working diligently to ensure the well-being of our students and families through the development of our Community Schools model. Our goal is to strengthen the ties between schools, families, and the wider community by creating a support network where every child has the opportunity to thrive. Across Butte County, school districts such as Oroville, Chico, Paradise, and many others are joining the effort as part of the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP).

Our Community Schools are designed to:

1. Address out-of-school barriers to learning through integrated student supports
2. Expand and enrich learning opportunities for students
3. Foster strong family and community engagement in the educational process
4. Collaborate with local partners to offer essential services and support to students and families

Our Strengths and Bright Spots

We’re proud of the progress we've made and the unique strengths we’re able to draw upon:

• Community Resilience: In the face of natural disasters, from wildfires to floods, Butte County has shown incredible resilience. This strength is reflected in our Community Schools, which prioritize mental health and emotional well-being for students and families affected by these challenges.
• Agricultural and Environmental Resources: With our county’s strong agricultural base and access to outdoor education opportunities, we’re connecting students to real-world experiences that bridge academic learning with the natural world.
• Cultural and Linguistic Diversity: Our schools are home to a wonderfully diverse student population, enriching our community and bringing a variety of perspectives to the table.
• Family and Community Engagement: We recognize that education is most effective when families and communities are fully involved. Butte County’s Community Schools are dedicated to making family engagement a core part of the educational experience.
