North Star schools featured in UCLA's Community Schooling Journal

Shasta COE is honored to be featured in UCLA's Center for Community Schools Journal, where we contributed articles that touch on four diverse perspectives on community schools in Shasta County. The School Case focuses on Igo-Ono Elementary, where Community Connect ensures students and families receive support they've requested to thrive and learn. The Teacher Scholarship feature tells the story of Shaw Tiefenbach, whose journey from early childhood educator to mental health practitioner emphasizes the importance of addressing students’ well-being by working with their whole family. In the Youth Research video, graduate students share their experiences working as mental health practitioners in local schools. Finally, the Policy ABCs article highlights a meaningful collaboration between SCOE and local American Indian tribes, resulting in policy changes and even shaping state law. These videos and written stories were put together by Aaron Steinmetz, Traci Allen, Jeannie Jacobs, Danielle Wulfestieg, and Kerri Schuette, with leadership from Joy Garcia. The people featured in the articles and videos included SCOE staff Shaw Tiefenbach and Brayden McClung.
